What is Liquid Cooling Technology?

Liquid cooling technology involves using coolant fluids to lower the temperature of equipment. Unlike traditional air-cooling methods, which use fans to expel heat from inside the equipment, liquid cooling provides a more efficient heat dissipation solution, especially as servers' computational power increases. Liquid cooling is typically divided into two main categories: Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC) and Immersion Cooling.

Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC)

This method surrounds heat-generating components with sealed coolant pipes. Copper plates conduct the heat to the coolant, which then flows out of the server and through a heat exchanger, where it dissipates the heat before returning to the system.

Immersion Cooling

Servers are submerged directly in dielectric fluids, allowing the liquid to absorb and dissipate heat through either single-phase or two-phase physical phase changes.

Advantages of Immersion Cooling Technology

Immersion cooling offers several advantages, with the most notable being improved cooling efficiency. Immersion systems effectively absorb and dissipate heat, overcoming the thermal resistance and conduction issues found in air-cooled systems, significantly enhancing thermal performance. Additionally, immersion cooling is energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. Compared to traditional systems, it reduces the need for fans and air-conditioning, saving energy and lowering carbon emissions.

The Role of Coolants in Immersion Cooling Systems

Common types of coolants include fluorinated fluids, synthetic oils, and silicone oils. Synthetic oils, including mineral oils, offer good heat capacity and conductivity but pose environmental concerns and odor issues, leading to their gradual phase-out. Silicone oils, on the other hand, are frequently used in specialized cooling systems due to their thermal and chemical properties.
