Palm Oil and Oil-Based Cutting Fluids: Challenges and Opportunities in Sustainability and Industrial Applications
Palm oil is one of the most important vegetable oils globally, widely used in food, cosmetics, and industrial sectors. In particular, palm oil is frequently utilized as a base material for producing oil-based cutting fluids. These industrial oils are crucial in metalworking for lubrication, cooling, and reducing wear. This article explores the connection between palm oil and oil-based cutting fluids, and examines the impact of Indonesia Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certification on this relationship.
Overview of Palm Oil
Palm oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the fruit of oil palm trees, primarily produced in Malaysia and Indonesia. Its high yield and low cost make it a competitive product in global markets. According to statistics, in 2015, Indonesian smallholders owned 4.65 million hectares of palm oil plantations, accounting for about 40% of the country’s total plantation area. This proportion has steadily increased over time, highlighting the significance of palm oil in Indonesia's economy.
Applications of Oil-Based Cutting Fluids
Oil-based cutting fluids consist of base oils and water-insoluble additives, such as anti-rust agents and lubricants, used in various CNC machining operations without dilution. These oils effectively reduce friction, lower temperatures, and extend tool life during metal cutting and machining processes. Due to its excellent lubricating properties and stability, palm oil has become an ideal base material for oil-based cutting fluids. Compared to traditional mineral oils, palm oil-based cutting fluids offer higher biodegradability and lower environmental pollution risks.
In CNC machining, oil-based cutting fluids have broad applications, ranging from light to heavy cutting operations, such as gear hobbing, broaching, turning, and drilling. They are widely used in industries like hardware components, bicycles, and automotive parts. Compared to water-soluble cutting oils, oil-based cutting fluids provide superior lubrication and rust prevention, making them especially suitable for precision machining.
The Impact of Indonesia Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) Certification
In 2011, the Indonesian government introduced the ISPO certification policy to promote sustainable palm oil production. This policy requires all palm oil companies operating in Indonesia to comply with sustainability principles. However, the implementation of ISPO certification has been slow, with only a small number of companies and smallholders obtaining certification. As of 2017, only 607 companies (around 35% of the total operating companies) had achieved ISPO certification, reflecting the challenges of the certification process.
Smallholders are a key focus of ISPO certification but face numerous challenges in the process, including issues related to land exchange and incomplete legal documentation. For example, the Sari Makmur smallholder community has been a pilot project since 2011 but has yet to obtain ISPO certification. This highlights the difficulties of certification when land legality issues remain unresolved.
Future Challenges and Opportunities for Palm Oil in Oil-Based Cutting Fluids
Palm oil demonstrates significant potential in industrial applications, especially in the production of oil-based cutting fluids. However, achieving sustainable production and application of palm oil requires overcoming challenges in the certification process. ISPO certification aims to enhance sustainable management through strengthened collaboration between companies and smallholders, raising production standards for palm oil. This not only helps protect the environment but also boosts palm oil’s competitiveness in international markets.
Japanese cutting oil manufacturer MORESCO offers a prime example of palm oil application.Neat oil MORESCO’s NN series contains inactive sulfur, suitable for cutting non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, brass, and copper. Meanwhile, the NA series contains active sulfur additives, ideal for cutting ferrous metals such as carbon steel and stainless steel. These oils are suitable for both high- and low-speed machining, showcasing the versatility of oil-based cutting fluids in various materials and machining processes.
Palm oil holds tremendous potential in producing oil-based cutting fluids, but its sustainable development depends on effective certification and governance mechanisms. The ISPO certification seeks to advance sustainable palm oil production but faces challenges during implementation. Through multi-level governance and enhanced cooperation, smallholders and companies can jointly promote the sustainable production of palm oil, adding value to its industrial applications. Only by balancing sustainability and industrial applications can palm oil remain competitive in the global market while contributing to environmental protection.
